Drilling Equipment and solutions for construction, Industry Exposure and  Products.

Since the discovery of resources buried deep under the earth, human beings have tried their hand at improving underground mining techniques. In the quest to improve the functioning of mining industries, many overlook aspects like energy consumption and equipment maintenance.

However, with the safety and energy concerns that arise with activities like coal mining, it is imperative to achieve sustainable development while increasing the productivity of mining activities.

While aiming for productive industrial drilling, it is no secret that picking the right tools can boost the output from mining activities. Here are some variables to consider before picking the industrial drilling tools to increase the efficiency and productivity while underground mining.

Location

Preparing the site where the drill enters is another factor that contributes to the activity's output. This is especially important when it comes to industrial drilling at construction sites. When a drill tip is made to enter a flat surface, the drill is directed by balanced cutting forces and the holes produced are precise.

On the other hand, convex and concave surfaces, or even uneven surfaces require extra effort to flatten the surface and skills from the user's part to achieve good results. Besides, these scenarios call for the RPM of the drill to be reduced, more coolant pressure to be applied, and even external flood coolants to be utilized.

Summing It Up

The productivity of industrial drilling is affected by numerous variables. Picking the right tools after taking these factors into account can make working with mining equipment exponentially better. Expending resources without proper knowledge about factors that contribute to the optimal performance of underground mining tools is both hazardous and wasteful.

The Top Hammer Drill Rig series produced by our company is a top hammer drilling rig for open-air engineering applications. Its core technology uses high-frequency hydraulic rock drilling technology from well-known domestic and foreign manufacturers and floating crawlers to make the drilling rig have flexible transition and positioning , high frequency, efficient rock drilling and other advantages.

What Is a Top Hammer Drill Rig?

During the process of Top Hammer Drilling, the top hammer drilling rig produces a percussive force on the drill rods or tubes, which is transmitted to the drill bit. The feed device is usually attached with a hinged boom to a mobile unit. The top hammer drill machine is widely used in the mining, construction, and quarrying of rock material. As a professional hydraulic drilling rig manufacturer in UAE, Taiye can provide  various types of the hydraulic rotary rig for top hammer drilling of hard materials.

Can You Use a Top Hammer Drill as a Regular Drill?

This top hammer drill is also called "hydraulic rotary hammer drill", which is a core bore drilling machine with a forward thrusting force. As the drill bit spins, the top hammer drilling machine rapidly vibrates front to back, allowing it to drill through hard materials such as stone, concrete, tile, or brick.

The modes of high-quality top hammer drilling rigs usually have three modes for their function. The "hammer" mode provides a straight impact force. The "drill" mode provides a rotary action as in a regular drill. The "hammer drill" mode provides a combination of both.

Generally speaking, top hammer drilling machines tend to be more expensive than regular drills. Another consideration in hammer drills is weight and size. Top hammer drilling machines tend to be heavier and bigger than regular drills and often come with a side-mounted handle to aid in their control.

A top hammer drill machine certainly can be used as a regular drill by putting it in "drill" mode, it has some limitations and a complete tool inventory should ideally include both. However, if you're only going to buy one drill, a hammer drill is the more versatile of the two.

How Does a Top Hammer Drill Rig Machine Work?

Hydraulic rotary drilling is all about power and speed. You need a lot of power to break into solid rock and high speed to repeatedly hammer away at a work site. For safety and high productivity, many of today's hydraulic borewell machines adopt remote control.

Top hammer hydraulic rotary drilling hammers the rock with impacts transferred from the rock drill to a drill bit in the bottom of a hole. Hydraulic pressure generates the force required pressure builds to a maximum and when released, drives an impact piston forward. When the piston strikes a chuck, it transfers its kinetic energy as a stress wave through a drill rod to the drill bit, which uses this impact energy to break the rock. The hydraulic rotary rig has the highest drilling productivity and the economy requires the operation of all components in the system to be highly synchronized.

What is Top Hammer vs Down the Hole - Drill Tech International

Top Hammer vs Down the Hole essentially involves a drilling hammer at the bottom of a drill string. It relies on three elements for drilling holes: bit loading (weight), rotation and air. These active elements combine to be efficient at crushing rock. As the drill string slowly rotates, the drilling hammer is forced into the rock repeatedly. Striking power is provided by compressed air driving a piston inside the hammer.

Where is it used?

DTH drilling is often used in the mining industry (blast hole drilling), on construction sites, drilling water wells, and in the oil and gas industry.

Top Hammer vs Down the Hole Advantages

Top Hammer vs Down the Hole offers several advantages over top-hammer drilling for larger, deeper holes in medium-hard formations. Because the hammer is at the bottom of the hole, power loss is minimal as the hole deepens. That means energy is not lost in the drill string and penetration rates do not markedly decline with depth—provided that back pressure does not rise significantly in the borehole. DTH drilling is most suitable for hole diameters of 4–10 inches, with some exceptions.

Compressed Air Power

The DTH hammer is pneumatically powered, with the compressed air propelling it forward to impact and fracture rock. Compressed air also travels through the drill bit into the hole (air exhaust), which blows the chips and dust out of the hole.

Quieter Drilling

From environmental and social perspectives, DTH is a good option because it produces much less noise and vibration than many other drilling methods.

Before drilling operations commence the driller should examine the extraction face from the bottom to look for geological problems, loose or shattered rock or dangerous overhangs, and areas of potentially reduced burden.

At the top of the quarry face the driller should check for ground stability issues, excessive cracking of the rock, shear planes or other potential rock failures.

If issues are identified then the Driller must raise these with the appropriate responsible person such as the Operator, Manager, Explosives Supervisor and Shotfirer and if necessary the blasting specification should be amended.

The Driller should thoroughly check their equipment prior to tracking into position, these checks should include the condition of the drill string and the drill bit/hammer, the operation of the dust extraction equipment, guarding of moving parts and the condition of hydraulic hoses.

The Driller should not commence any drilling operations unless adequate edge protection is in place at the quarry face. If the Driller is required to erect the edge protection then they must carry out such operations using suitably anchored fall arrest equipment.

Do you need for Excellent Top Hammer Drill Machine - Drill Tech International

Drill Tech International is a professional Organisation founded in 2015 that offers complete drilling systems and solutions for construction, Industrial, mining and quarrying industry and we are representing well known brands in construction & mining equipment,Exploration Drilling Equipment, drilling consumables and OEM replacement parts. Drilling Equipment and solutions for construction, Industry Exposure and  Products.

Our Drill Tech International of Top Hammer Drill Machine

1.Exceptionally high power-to-weight ratio hammer drill machine.

2.Highly versatile hammer drill machine: suitable for drilling in concrete, wood, and metal.

3.Perfect balance, low weight and compact designed hammer drills for maximum  comfort.

4.Extra-long lifetime thanks to highly robust chuck and motor components as well as rugged casing materials.

6.Best hammer drill machine for drilling in wood and metal using the optional quick-release chuck and drill bits with smooth shank up to 13 mm diameter.

One of the requests most often voiced by drill operators is for automated and remote-controlled drilling machines capable of drilling an entire work session before being removed for the blasting operation. But while control systems might theoretically enable this, new solutions are necessary for consumables to practically allow it.

Flexible and fast to set up top hammer drills are ideal for narrow and short boreholes in hard rockFlexible and fast to set up, top hammer drills are ideal for narrow and short boreholes in hard rock

"The traditional drilling bits can't last long enough, but developed special bits with diamond coated carbides that can perform in the desired way. That means one drill bit being able to drill typically about 3,000 - 3,300ft (900 - 1,000m), and it will be able to maintain the drilling performance well all the way towards the end of its life without sharpening". "While the diamond bit unit cost is clearly higher than a usual TH bit, it does offer an extremely good total cost per metre payback."

Together with the general improvements in the durability of drilling consumables, operators' ever prevalent desire to improve efficiency and the consequent continuous increase in drilling power are also creating new demands to the drilling string, especially the threads. As a response, the market is seeing new thread designs, like for example shoulder supported male/female thread, that many operators have found an improvement to the traditional thread designs.

However, it is not one specific innovation or application which will decide the efficiency and profitability of top hammer drilling on a specific project. the old skill of adding up all cost-determining factors and establishing the total drilling cost (TDC). "TDC is a sum of productivity cost of drilling in terms of time and cost per metre (drill string endurance)," he explains.

Energy saving is another key factor as sometimes drilling is set-up to drill with highest pressures, while not necessarily needed. In short, concludes, what needs to be focussed on is what can be done to increase productivity by increasing drilling speed, avoiding downtime and managing the lifetime of wear products.

Do You Want Excellent Top Hammer Drill Rigs - Drill Tech International

Drill Tech International is committed to researching, testing, and recommending the best products. We may receive commissions from purchases made after visiting links within our content.

Hammer drills work like standard drills but include a hammering function that drives the bit into the material while the bit turns. This impact helps the bit get through tough materials like concrete, brick, and block with much more ease  on the bit and the user  than a standard drill. Hammer drills come in both corded and cordless models. Corded drills generally offer more power and higher drilling speed (measured in rotations per minute, or RPM), and they don't slow down with use like cordless drills do as their batteries wear down. Cordless drills offer convenience and tend to feel and operate more like standard drills.

Difference between Top Hammer vs Down the Hole Drilling - Drill Tech International

There are two types of drilling approaches used in industrial applications. Two common methods, the Top Hammer vs Down the Hole drilling methods, perform similar functions but in different ways. The primary difference between the top hammer and down-the-hole drilling methods is where the hammer is attached.

The hammer in the industrial equipment makes contact with the bit during the Down the Hole drilling method. The top hammer drilling method’s activity is concentrated at the very top of the drill string. The activity occurs separately from the bore.

Top Drilling

With the Top Drilling Method, the piston will increase to the ideal rate. Once the goal velocity has been reached, the striking part of the process begins and disturbs the particles. Once it has struck the surface, the particles disseminated are transmitted throughout the area.

As this is done repeatedly, the stress wave triggers a vibration throughout the rod based on the angling of the drilling activity. The stress waves created are influenced by the piston and drill string. Different geometric configurations shape the stress waves, determining the outcome of the drilling area.

Down the Hole drilling

During the Drill-Down the Hole method, the hammer doesn’t concentrate its efforts around the circumference. Instead, the process involves focusing the drill down the actual hole. The hammers strike the surface directly during the drilling process. Often chosen because it is the more accurate of the two approaches, it is able to maintain a consistent drilling rate.

Main Difference between Top Hammer vs Down the Hole Drilling

Powered by pressurized air, down-the-hole drilling is a more efficient approach. The rate of this method is much slower. As the depth increases, the performance degrades. The Top Hammer Drilling relies on hydraulic energy, so its performance remains consistent regardless of the depth.

The downside is the top hammer drill requires frequent parts replacement over time because the stress applied rapidly increases wear and tear.

DTH drills are mechanically superior from an efficiency standpoint when compared to the top drilling counterpart. The Top Hammer Drilling approach achieves a consistent performance, making it the perfect choice for productive drilling at extremely low levels.

In determining whether or not one drilling method makes sense over another method, you can prioritize your goals. If consistency is the primary objective, then the hydraulic-powered top hammer is better suited. If you are looking for a more efficient experience, then the down-the-hole drilling equipment is probably a better fit.

Top Hammer Drills tend to have a longer service life when compared to their Down the Hole drilling counterparts. If accuracy is a focus, then the down-the-hole drilling technologies are the best fit. Both styles are well-suited for soft and medium rock. For use in hard work drilling, the Top Hammer Drills will provide the best experience.
