Best Top Hammer Drill Machine - Drill Tech International

The Drilltech International  is a professional grade corded hammer drill which is available in 240v or 110v. Corded operation has historically provided more speed and power than battery powered designs, and unlike their cordless counterparts corded hammer drills won’t run out of power halfway through a job.

They are usually a cheaper option as you don’t have to invest in batteries and chargers; however they are not particularly well suited to driving screws – it is rare to find any kind of torque control on a Top Hammer Drill Machine, and they are often slow to brake once the trigger is released. On top of this they are usually fairly large, heavy machines designed for two-handed operation, all of which makes them difficult to use with precision – especially in cramped spaces. Like corded rotary drills, hammer drills are often available in 110v or 240v – the 240v options can be used with standard household power sockets but the 110v versions can only be used with step down transformers as used on building sites and in other industrial environments.

Top Hammer Drill Machine Overview

1- Combination drill and countersinks (center drills), counter bores, reamers, taps, and other small shank cutters can also be supported in this way.

2- Tapered-shank twist drills may be held directly in the tailstock tapered spindle as long as a good fit exists.

3- If the drill shank is not the correct size, then a drill socket or sleeve may be used in the tailstock spindle.

4- A twist drill holder is used to support large twist drills with the tailstock center.

5- The drill is inserted into the holder and the tailstock center is placed in the center hole which is located at the rear of the drill holder.

6- The holder will rest on the cross slide or compound rest and must be supported by hand until it is held secure by pressure between the tailstock and headstock.

7- When using this method, never withdraw or loosen the tailstock spindle while the lathe is rotating or the workpiece can be thrown out at the operator.

8- Always stop the machine before attempting to withdraw the twist drill.

9- Another method of supporting a large twist drill in the tailstock is to fasten a lathe dog to the drill shank and support the rear of the drill with the tailstock center in the center hole in the tang of the drill.

Top Hammer Drill Machine of Drilling operations

1-  Drilling is the production of cylindrical holes of definite diameters in work pieces by using a multipoint cutting tool called a drill.

2- The drill chuck is mounted in a tailstock spindle and the feeding on the drill to work is done by rotating the tailstock hand wheel.

3- To start the drilling operation, compute the correct RPM for the drill and bet the spindle speed accordingly. Ensure the tailstock is clamped down on the lathe.

4- The feed is controlled by turning the tailstock hand wheel.

5- The graduations on the tailstock spindle are used to determine the depth of cut.

6- If a large twist drill is used, it should be preceded by a pilot drill, the diameter of which should be wider than the larger drill web.

7- Use a suitable cutting fluid while drilling.

8- Always withdraw the drill and brush out the chips before attempting to check the depth of the hole.

9- If the drill is wobbling and wiggling in the hole, use a tool holder turned backwards to steady the drill.

10- Always use a drill that is properly ground for the material to be drilled.

11- Use care when feeding the drill into the work to avoid breaking the drill off in the work.

12- Drill should never be removed from the work while the spindle is turning because the drill could be pulled off the tailstock spindle and cause injury or damage.

Boring

1- Boring is the process of enlarging and truing an existing drilled or core hole with a single point cutting tool.

Necessity of boring a hole

1- To enlarge a drilled hole larger than the drill size as drills are available in standard sizes only.

2- To obtain concentricity of the hole.

3- To maintain accuracy of the hole.

4- To remove the error formed by drilling, and to facilitate the remaining operation.

5- To obtain better surface finish.

Types of boring tools

1- The following are the different types of boring tools.

1- Solid forged tools.

2- Boring bars with bits.

3- Brazed tools.

4- Throw away bits inserted in special holders.

Advantages

1- Available with square and round shank.

2- Enable the tool to mount easily.

3- Re-grinding is easy.

4- As the tool is integral, alignment is easy.

5- Can be easily forged to the required shape and angle.

What is Top Hammer vs Down the Hole - Drill Tech International

Top Hammer vs Down the Hole essentially involves a drilling hammer at the bottom of a drill string. It relies on three elements for drilling holes: bit loading (weight), rotation and air. These active elements combine to be efficient at crushing rock. As the drill string slowly rotates, the drilling hammer is forced into the rock repeatedly. Striking power is provided by compressed air driving a piston inside the hammer.

Where is it used?

DTH drilling is often used in the mining industry (blast hole drilling), on construction sites, drilling water wells, and in the oil and gas industry.

Top Hammer vs Down the Hole Advantages

Top Hammer vs Down the Hole offers several advantages over top-hammer drilling for larger, deeper holes in medium-hard formations. Because the hammer is at the bottom of the hole, power loss is minimal as the hole deepens. That means energy is not lost in the drill string and penetration rates do not markedly decline with depth—provided that back pressure does not rise significantly in the borehole. DTH drilling is most suitable for hole diameters of 4–10 inches, with some exceptions.

Compressed Air Power

The DTH hammer is pneumatically powered, with the compressed air propelling it forward to impact and fracture rock. Compressed air also travels through the drill bit into the hole (air exhaust), which blows the chips and dust out of the hole.

Quieter Drilling

From environmental and social perspectives, DTH is a good option because it produces much less noise and vibration than many other drilling methods.

Before drilling operations commence the driller should examine the extraction face from the bottom to look for geological problems, loose or shattered rock or dangerous overhangs, and areas of potentially reduced burden.

At the top of the quarry face the driller should check for ground stability issues, excessive cracking of the rock, shear planes or other potential rock failures.

If issues are identified then the Driller must raise these with the appropriate responsible person such as the Operator, Manager, Explosives Supervisor and Shotfirer and if necessary the blasting specification should be amended.

The Driller should thoroughly check their equipment prior to tracking into position, these checks should include the condition of the drill string and the drill bit/hammer, the operation of the dust extraction equipment, guarding of moving parts and the condition of hydraulic hoses.

The Driller should not commence any drilling operations unless adequate edge protection is in place at the quarry face. If the Driller is required to erect the edge protection then they must carry out such operations using suitably anchored fall arrest equipment.

But while control systems might theoretically enable this, new solutions are necessary for consumables to practically allow it.

Flexible and fast to set up top hammer drills are ideal for narrow and short boreholes in hard rockFlexible and fast to set up, top hammer drills are ideal for narrow and short boreholes in hard rock

"The traditional drilling bits can't last long enough, but developed special bits with diamond coated carbides that can perform in the desired way. That means one drill bit being able to drill typically about 3,000 - 3,300ft (900 - 1,000m), and it will be able to maintain the drilling performance well all the way towards the end of its life without sharpening". "While the diamond bit unit cost is clearly higher than a usual TH bit, it does offer an extremely good total cost per metre payback."

Together with the general improvements in the durability of drilling consumables, operators' ever prevalent desire to improve efficiency and the consequent continuous increase in drilling power are also creating new demands to the drilling string, especially the threads. As a response, the market is seeing new thread designs, like for example shoulder supported male/female thread, that many operators have found an improvement to the traditional thread designs.

However, it is not one specific innovation or application which will decide the efficiency and profitability of top hammer drilling on a specific project. the old skill of adding up all cost-determining factors and establishing the total drilling cost (TDC). "TDC is a sum of productivity cost of drilling in terms of time and cost per metre (drill string endurance)," he explains.

Energy saving is another key factor as sometimes drilling is set-up to drill with highest pressures, while not necessarily needed. In short, concludes, what needs to be focussed on is what can be done to increase productivity by increasing drilling speed, avoiding downtime and managing the lifetime of wear products.

Best Top Hammer Drill Machine - Drill Tech International

Top Hammer Drill Machine work like standard drills but include a hammering function that drives the bit into the material while the bit turns. This impact helps the bit get through tough materials like concrete, brick, and block with much more ease on the bit and the user than a standard drill. Hammer drills come in both corded and cordless models. Corded drills generally offer more power and higher drilling speed (measured in rotations per minute, or RPM), and they don't slow down with use like cordless drills do as their batteries wear down. Cordless drills offer convenience and tend to feel and operate more like standard drills.

Whatever your application, Drill Tech International has the perfect drill rig for you. Drill Tech International range carries everything from lightweight rubber-tired, radio controlled rigs to extremely powerful crawler drills. We have designed the safest cabins, the most powerful hydraulic rotation heads, the most advanced mechanized rod handling systems and the most intelligent semi-automated drilling systems. Whatever and wherever you need to drill, we're here to help you.

We understand what it is you need from your drilling equipment which is why our surface DTH (down-the-hole) and dimensional stone drill rigs have all been perfectly designed for optimal accuracy, efficiency and safety. Whether you're drilling production holes, pre-split holes or anything in-between, all of our rock drilling machinery is built with safety in mind. This is why all of our rock drilling equipment comes with efficient dust collection and suppression technology along with dustproof components for longer lifecycles and reduced maintenance costs.

Benefits of Top Hammer Drill Machine

1.Faster Penetration compared to DTH

2.Limited in hole size and depth (although recent advances in straight hole technology are removing this limitation

3.Lower fuel consumption

The percussive force of the Top Hammer Drill Machine  produced by the piston of the pump in the hydraulic drilling rig, is transmitted to the drill bit via shank adapter and drill pipe, This is the difference between DTH drilling. Meanwhile, the percussion system drives the drilling system rotation. When the stress wave reaches the drill bit, the energy is transmitted to the rock in the form of bit penetration. The combination of these functions enables drilling holes into the hard rock, and the air compressor only performs dust removal and slagging in top hammer drilling.

The combination of these functions enables drilling holes into the hard rock, and the air compressor only performs dust removal and slagging in top hammer drilling.

Impact energy multiplied by impact frequency together creates the percussive output of the drifter. However, Top Hammer Drill Machine used for hole diameter maximum 127mm, and hole depth less than 20M, which resulted in high efficiency.

Difference between Top Hammer vs Down the Hole Drilling - Drill Tech International

There are two types of drilling approaches used in industrial applications. Two common methods, the Top Hammer vs Down the Hole drilling methods, perform similar functions but in different ways. The primary difference between the top hammer and down-the-hole drilling methods is where the hammer is attached.

The hammer in the industrial equipment makes contact with the bit during the Down the Hole drilling method. The top hammer drilling method’s activity is concentrated at the very top of the drill string. The activity occurs separately from the bore.

Top Drilling

With the Top Drilling Method, the piston will increase to the ideal rate. Once the goal velocity has been reached, the striking part of the process begins and disturbs the particles. Once it has struck the surface, the particles disseminated are transmitted throughout the area.

As this is done repeatedly, the stress wave triggers a vibration throughout the rod based on the angling of the drilling activity. The stress waves created are influenced by the piston and drill string. Different geometric configurations shape the stress waves, determining the outcome of the drilling area.

Down the Hole drilling

During the Drill-Down the Hole method, the hammer doesn’t concentrate its efforts around the circumference. Instead, the process involves focusing the drill down the actual hole. The hammers strike the surface directly during the drilling process. Often chosen because it is the more accurate of the two approaches, it is able to maintain a consistent drilling rate.

Main Difference between Top Hammer vs Down the Hole Drilling

Powered by pressurized air, down-the-hole drilling is a more efficient approach. The rate of this method is much slower. As the depth increases, the performance degrades. The Top Hammer Drilling relies on hydraulic energy, so its performance remains consistent regardless of the depth.

The downside is the top hammer drill requires frequent parts replacement over time because the stress applied rapidly increases wear and tear.

DTH drills are mechanically superior from an efficiency standpoint when compared to the top drilling counterpart. The Top Hammer Drilling approach achieves a consistent performance, making it the perfect choice for productive drilling at extremely low levels.

In determining whether or not one drilling method makes sense over another method, you can prioritize your goals. If consistency is the primary objective, then the hydraulic-powered top hammer is better suited. If you are looking for a more efficient experience, then the down-the-hole drilling equipment is probably a better fit.

Top Hammer Drills tend to have a longer service life when compared to their Down the Hole drilling counterparts. If accuracy is a focus, then the down-the-hole drilling technologies are the best fit. Both styles are well-suited for soft and medium rock. For use in hard work drilling, the Top Hammer Drills will provide the best experience.

What is Top Hammer Drilling Method - Drilltech International

Versatile and flexible, top hammer drilling is used by various industries all over the world. The rigs can be taken to challenging job locations, drilling contractors usually have machines available with short notice, and they tend to be cheaper than DTH or rotary drilling rigs.

"On the drilling consumable side, Top Hammer Drilling Method string is also cost-efficient, fast to set up and, with a wide range of available bit designs, top hammer bits can always be optimised for the ground conditions."

The advantages and possibilities of Top Hammer Drilling Method do, however, not just mean a broad range of possible applications, but also an equally broad range of clients and demands. Increased automation, longer bit durability and improved efficiency are among the requirements that need to be met by developers.

Ideal for Mining and Underground Operations

Ideal for drilling narrow and short boreholes (down to 1in wide and up to 40m in length) in hard rock, Top Hammer Drilling Method are primarily used in mining, construction, and for quarrying of rock material.

"Top Hammer drilling should be the default choice for all holes with a width between 1-1/2 - 4in and a depth of up to around 30m. Ground conditions do not impact so much on the choice of drilling methodology, but it obviously has a great impact on the tool selection. An exception to this is speciality applications like tunnel forepoling, where weak ground conditions mean that forepoling is necessary - which in turn automatically calls for top hammer methodology.

Specifically, the Top Hammer Drilling Method is widely preferred and used in underground mining operations because of the possibility of using water to flush out cuttings. Unlike other technologies, which flush with air, this improves the underground work environment by minimising the impact of drilling dust in the air.

On top of this, top hammer drilling allows for a larger number of smaller holes enabling more accurate and controlled blasting, something which is usually highly critical in underground operations.

The challenges and limitations of the Top Hammer Drilling Method

While advantageous in many situations, the top hammer method also has its limitations and drawbacks. One of the biggest challenges is the fact that as the drill string loses percussion energy towards the bit, longer rods will lead to a larger energy loss and less efficiency.

Additionally, the repeated shock waves from the hydraulic hammer on couplings and rods of top drifter drill strings create continuous wear on components, meaning that top hammer drills usually require more consumables in the long run. This also goes for drill bits which, with traditional bits, may need to be changed or sharpened several times during a work session. The requirement for manually operated replacements or upkeep, in turn, works against one of the strongest demands within the industry, especially in underground drilling, namely the demand for greater automation.

New solutions and old skills

One of the requests most often voiced by drill operators is for automated and remote-controlled drilling machines capable of drilling an entire work session before being removed for the blasting operation. But while control systems might theoretically enable this, new solutions are necessary for consumables to practically allow it. flexible and fast to set up top hammer drills are ideal for narrow and short boreholes in hard rockFlexible and fast to set up, top hammer drills are ideal for narrow and short boreholes in hard rock.
